Nuno Tavares is back in form in Lazio, thanks above all to the work of Stefano Gattuso, who brought him back to the level of a true left back. The Portuguese, who had a lackluster start to the season, has managed to turn his role into a strength for the team.
Tavares' first season with Lazio was marked by difficult moments: a sensational error in the first leg derby, difficulties with coach Sarri and the request for a transfer in January to Besiktas, which however failed to guarantee the obligation to buy. In 2023 the Italian Cup final against Inter almost marked the end of his Biancocelesti adventure. In the summer, with the arrival of Pedraza and the competition increasing, it seemed that the Portuguese might be left behind.
During the preparation friendlies, Gattuso preferred the use of Tavares, even if in some matches he showed a fluctuating form. The Portuguese's debut against Bologna, where he came on as a substitute, marked the start of a recovery period. From that moment the transfer rumors vanished and Gattuso decided to focus on him, with results that exceeded expectations.
Tavares has proven to be a complete left back: he has one goal and two assists, he is second in number of successful dribbles per game, second in expected assists behind Valeri, and first in attempted shots per game. With a top speed of 35.7 km/h, it achieved the highest peak speed recorded by the team. His contribution was fundamental to the defense and attack, offering constant support in both the defensive and offensive phases.
With the current season, Lazio can count on a reliable and dynamic left back. Gattuso demonstrated that he has found the player who, two years ago, had contributed to making the team fly. Tavares' future now seems more stable, and the team can count on him to face the challenges of Serie A and European competitions.
