Inter suffered their second defeat in the Champions League, losing 4-3 at home against Brugge and remaining without points in the mini-group standings. Coach Cristian Chivu held a press conference in which he analyzed the match and indicated the aspects that need to be improved to get back into shape.
According to Chivu, the main difficulty was the defence, which suffered from incorrect pressure and distances. "The wrong pressures and long distances affected the result. When we stuck to the references we arrived late," he explained. In the first half Inter played well, but in the second half they lost clarity and became frenetic, leaving space for Bruges, who took advantage of the speed of their attackers. “We haven't been back in the game since 2‑1,” added the coach.
Chivu underlined that we cannot talk about "Champions syndrome", but that it is necessary to find the right balance in a high-level tournament. "We are aware of what we have done. It doesn't mean that we are poorer than yesterday or last year. We need to find the right balance even here where the level is very high," he said. Inter still have six games in this mini-group and the coach has declared that he will do his best to reverse the trend.
As for comebacks, Chivu reiterated that they cannot be made without anger and determination. "We want to act rather than react. Today we lacked clarity and we had too much frenzy. The problem is that you pay in the Champions League. There is quality and there are prepared teams that put you in difficulty", he observed. The midfield was "too high" and the defensive closures were too wide, factors that contributed to the defeat.
Finally, Chivu expressed the need to maintain calm and humility, recognizing that there is a lot of work to do. "We must remain calm and have the humility in understanding that we have to play a certain type of matches in the Champions League. There is a lot to work on and improve," he concluded. With the next matches scheduled, Inter will have to correct defensive errors and regain clarity to try to recover precious points in the final phase of the tournament.
