Fiorentina finds itself in a crisis situation that seems destined to continue throughout the season. With just four points from eight games, the Viola team is at the level of a previous season in which, under the guidance of Stefano Pioli, they found themselves in the same position. The result is a grim picture, especially because, although the attack scored only two more goals than the previous year, the defense conceded 19 goals, seven more than in that period.
The summer transfer window turned out to be a real flop. The defensive department, renewed largely thanks to Paratici's operations, ended up at the center of criticism. The investments were massive: between Viery, Valdepenas, Joao Mario, Dragusin and Jimenez, Fiorentina spent around 74 million euros. This figure, however, is not reflected in the performances on the pitch. Only the Spanish full-back showed some light, while the other new arrivals failed to live up to expectations. The entire summer signing campaign, which exceeded 130 million euros, remains in the dock, with the only purchase that has proven to be able to withstand the pressures of the role like Franco Mastantuono, who arrived on a dry loan.
The team also lost a crucial match at the San Siro, where they led until five minutes into the game. Inter overturned the result with a goal from Thuram and one from Zielinski, leading Fiorentina to their third consecutive KO. The final result of 2-1 left the group in a state of emotional and mental fragility, especially after injury time in which Inter's attack swept away any hope of recovery. De Gea's performance was, however, one of the most solid in the league, but it wasn't enough to save the team.
The climate of distrust that permeates Fiorentina is also evident in Zocca's words, sung before the match at the San Siro: "Every time she isn't there, just when I was looking for her". This sentence, after the episode, seems to reflect the purple season, in which victory was glimpsed, caressed and then vanished at the most beautiful moment. With relegation to Serie B still in sight, Fiorentina must now focus on survival, trying to consolidate their defense and make the most of the available resources to avoid falling into a new season in the second division.
