Bayern Munich’s head coach Vincent Kompany is expected to be sidelined for an extended period after collapsing on the training pitch on Friday with a viral infection. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed at a press conference on Saturday that Kompany remains in hospital in stable condition, and that medical staff are still determining the exact nature of his illness. “We are not setting any timeframes yet,” Eberl said. “We need to first figure out what it is and then discuss calmly what recovery time is to be. We won’t be talking about days, but weeks.”
Kompany’s absence will be felt in the upcoming Bundesliga fixture against Freiburg on Sunday. Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge of the team in his stead. Danks, who spoke briefly with Kompany on Friday, said he had only wished him well and avoided any football‑related conversation. “All the football operations are in our hands and we’ll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward,” he added. The club’s second‑team match was postponed after Kompany’s collapse, but Bayern chose not to delay the senior team’s game, hoping a positive result would lift the coach’s spirits.
Eberl emphasized that the club’s priority is Kompany’s health, but also noted that a good performance would be a morale boost for him. “I think the greatest joy for Vinnie would be for us to play well tomorrow and, ideally, get a positive result,” he said. Danks confirmed that Germany captain Joshua Kimmich, who has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday, would also miss the match.
Kompany returned to the bench for the Champions League group‑stage draw with Arsenal on Wednesday, though he missed the pre‑match press conference due to the virus. After the 2‑2 draw, he admitted that he had pushed his body too hard. “I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body – and then at some point my body just said: ‘Enough is enough!’” he explained.
Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga table, level on 14 points with Borussia Dortmund and one point ahead of Freiburg and Leverkusen. The club’s next Champions League fixture is scheduled for 3 November in Spain against Atlético Madrid. As the medical team continues investigations, the club will keep fans updated on Kompany’s recovery timeline.
