Girona's coach, Quique Álvarez, celebrated the resounding 5‑1 victory over Celta de Vigo, but remained cautious despite the confidence that the result generated. In the interview given after the match, the coach highlighted the collective evolution of his squad and the importance of continuing to work to consolidate their position in the fight for promotion.
The match, which was played at the Montilivi Stadium, was decided in the first half when the white-vermelho team scored four goals and Celta lost its central defender, Meixús, due to expulsion. With the score so wide, Álvarez used the time to give minutes to players who do not usually appear in the starting lineup, such as Abdul Mumin, who received his first appearance in the second half. The coach explained that the decision was based both on the effort the young man has shown in training and on the need to balance opportunities between defenders. “I wanted Junior to feel rewarded for his work, but that doesn't mean Moomin isn't well trained,” he said.
The coach also highlighted the growing internal competitiveness within the team. “The players train very well and it is a shame that not all of them can play at the same time, but everyone will have their opportunity until the end of the season,” he commented. Regarding the management of the changes, Álvarez explained that, after the win and the expulsion, the game was practically decided and he decided to rest some players who needed a break.
Despite the victory, the coach pointed out a point for improvement: Óscar Marcos' goal, which came when Girona already dominated by five goals. “It was an isolated play and showed a defensive disconnection that did not go unnoticed,” he lamented. “I wanted them to stay focused and that lack of organization put us in an awkward position.”
With the 21 points accumulated, Girona strengthens its position in the table and advances in the race for promotion. However, Quique Álvarez recalled that the team still has room for improvement and that good feelings should not generate excess confidence. "It's true that it was difficult for us to get going, but I don't want to get carried away by the good feelings of now. I'm focusing on the Cup and then on the next league games," he concluded.
