Olympique Lyonnais have confirmed that there will be no early departure of ZacharyAthekame to ACMilan during the winter transfer window. The rumor, fueled by Gazzettadello Sport which mentioned a possible return in January, was dismissed by coach PauloFonseca who declared that the information was “fake news”.
Athekame, 21, arrived in Lyon on loan from ACMilan without a purchase option. The Swiss player has already proven himself as a starter on the right side, scoring two goals and providing three assists in nine games in all competitions. His quick performances and adaptation to Fonseca's game solidified his place in the lineup, which naturally caught the attention of Milan management.
Despite the interest expressed by the Lombard club, Lyon management, as well as Fonseca and sporting director MatthieuLouis-Jean, have made it clear that they do not wish to change their plans for the current season. The loan is due to continue until the end of the season, and no agreement has been reached for an earlier return. FabriceHawkins, RMCSport journalist, confirmed that the player must finish the season in the Lyon jersey, stressing that OL do not wish to review their right lane strategies mid-year.
OL saw Athekame as a real asset for the right side, a position which was weakened by several absences and a busy schedule. His ability to play all over the right side and his performance in the latter stages of the game give Fonseca an additional option to strengthen the team.
In summary, the prospect of a transfer to Milan in January is now ruled out. ZacharyAthekame will remain at Lyon until the end of the season, continuing to contribute to the team's attack and defense. The next steps for the player will therefore remain linked to his development within OL, while ACMilan will have to look for other solutions to strengthen their right lane.
