Mauro Icardi, the Argentine striker who left Galatasaray on June 30 after the expiration of his contract, is now a free agent and has declared in an interview with *La Repubblica* that he is still looking for a club where he can return to the field of play. At 33 years old, the former captain of Inter Milan has expressed that his main objective is “to be useful and win”, and that, although he has received several offers, he prefers to wait to find a project to which he is completely committed.
During the conversation, Icardi recalled the importance of his time in Italy, especially at Inter, where he became captain and lived years of success. When asked if he dreamed of returning to the club's shirt, he answered clearly: "It would be special. I have lived important years with that shirt and the captain's armband; I have built a part of myself." However, he also spoke of the “painful” way in which his time at Inter ended, and stated that a return would only make sense if there was mutual trust and a common goal.
The forward also addressed his knee problem, which forced him to use injections every game. “The fact that such a serious problem was questioned was difficult to accept,” he said, adding that he could now explain it better and deal with situations more clearly. "Recognizing this does not detract from what I gave to Inter. It means that I have grown," he concluded.
Icardi has acknowledged that, throughout his career, he has sometimes seen himself more as a character than as a footballer, due to his performances and controversies off the field. However, he assures that those who have worked with him know his work ethic and his desire to win. “To those who think that I no longer have anything to contribute, I tell them that I am looking forward to proving it on the field,” he stated.
Regarding the possible demolition of the San Siro Stadium, the player expressed that “it is part of me” the idea of reentering the field and feeling the bustle of the fans, although he understands the need to have modern facilities that help increase income and compete with the big European teams. With this perspective, Icardi does not rule out returning to Inter Milan, the club he considers “the club of his life,” but he also remains open to exploring other opportunities where he can contribute and build something important.
