RCD Espanyol coach Manolo González was forced to respond to increasing pressure after the 2‑1 defeat against Racing de Ferrol, the last of five games in which the team has achieved only four victories in 31 games this season. When a journalist asked him if he was considering resigning, González remained calm and stated that the issue would be discussed privately with the sports director, Monchi, and not at a press conference.
The coach explained that the situation is “delicate, complicated and screwed up”, and that the only way to move forward is to continue working within the club. “Assessments must be made internally first,” he said, stressing that any decision on his continuity will depend on the club's management. González also noted that the team has lost intensity in the second half of games, which has contributed to the recent series of negative results.
Regarding criticism about the lack of pressure and the absence of a clear system, González maintained a stance of neutrality. He stated that the game strategy has not changed and that the substitutes have been attacking players for attacking players. “I don't know why we don't press,” he commented, but added that it is not a problem with the squad but with the dynamics of the game.
The issue of the penalty not awarded in the match with Racing was also mentioned. González avoided going into details about the refereeing, indicating that the match was lost due to internal decisions and not due to the lack of a penalty. “I don't want to talk about the referees,” he said, adding that the responsibility falls on the team.
The coach concluded that he has no intention of criticizing the club, the sports director or the squad. “I'm not going to attack anyone,” he stated, and recalled that the responsibility to improve falls on everyone involved. With the season still underway, RCD Espanyol will have to decide in the coming weeks whether to keep González at the head of the team or look for an alternative to reverse the bad streak.
