Club Brugge celebrated the 4-3 victory against Inter at the San Siro, but the match remained in the memory above all for the tenacity of Brandon Mechele, a 33-year-old Belgian defender. During the second half, shortly after the start, Mechele suffered a strong elbow in the face from Andy Diouf, which caused a broken nose. Despite bleeding and requiring medical attention on the pitch, the player continued to play without leaving the pitch.
According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Mechele received immediate treatment as blood poured from his nose. The club has already published some images of the defender on social media, accompanied by a post describing him as "always ready to give everything, a true warrior". The player stopped only for a few moments to be treated, inserting swabs into his nostrils, before resuming the match. Despite the fracture, Mechele played the rest of the match regularly and celebrated the victory with his teammates, holding a bag of ice to his face.
Final medical confirmation is still pending, as further x-ray tests are planned. However, the probability that the fracture will be confirmed is high, considering that Mechele has already had two similar accidents in the past, with broken nasal septum. On both occasions, the defender continued to play while wearing a protective mask for a certain period.
Club Brugge ended the match with a decisive result, but Mechele's episode added an element of drama to the match. The Belgian team has shown that it can count on players who do not hesitate to fight for victory, even at the cost of injuries. With the Champions League underway, Club Brugge will now face their next challenges, while Mechele will have to await medical confirmation and, if necessary, a recovery period. His resilience on the pitch, however, remains an example of determination for fans and colleagues.
