Yann Sommer, a Swiss goalkeeper who spent nine seasons with Inter, firmly defended the figure of Josep Martínez, the new Nerazzurri goalkeeper, in the face of the criticism that accompanied him after some errors on the pitch. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sommer reiterated that Martínez is an excellent goalkeeper with great potential and that, in his opinion, his performance was assessed incorrectly.
According to the Swiss, Martínez's interest in the Milan team was motivated by the pressure and expectations that come from those who play in one of the most important teams in Italy. "He doesn't need my advice," said Sommer, "he's an excellent goalkeeper, with potential, and also a very good boy. We had a great relationship in Milan. I watched some matches and I don't agree with the opinions: he's doing well, but playing for Inter is difficult, there's a lot of pressure." Sommer added that he is happy that Martínez had the opportunity to play for the national team and that Inter invested in him.
The Swiss goalkeeper, who is 37 years old, asked if he is thinking about retiring. “Why should I stop?” Sommer responded, explaining that he still feels very competitive and doesn't set a deadline for the end of his career. The move to Club Brugge allowed him to try a new experience and find new stimuli. "I feel good and I still have great motivation. I want to improve, train, give everything. As long as that's the case, I'll continue. And then I love playing in goal: why should I think of stopping?" Sommer said.
Sommer also spoke about his farewell to Inter, defining it as a shared separation with the club. “I have no regrets,” he said, “I had the opportunity to open a new chapter without losing the desire to compete at the highest level.” His decision to leave Inter in the summer was welcomed, both by the club and the goalkeeper, who underlined the importance of continuing to fight for success in every team he plays for.
