Bayern Munich is experiencing a moment of great uncertainty in goal, with the figure of Manuel Neuer, who will turn 41 this year, increasingly questioned. After the last match against Augsburg, in which a six-second distraction allowed Robin Fellhauer to score the fastest goal in the Bundesliga, the German press intensified the criticism. The daily newspaper Bild even published an article describing Neuer as “an old boxer just one fight away from becoming a clown”.
Despite the controversy, the club does not appear ready to change the hierarchy. Sporting director MaxEberl declared that he has full confidence in the captain, stating that "it can happen, especially after a twenty-year career" and that "Neuer is our number one and will continue to be so". Even president Vincent Kompany, who had initially planned to give Jonas Urbig the bench for the next Champions League against Viking, expressed his desire to field Neuer to relaunch him after the recent negative performance.
However, the pressure for an imminent handover is growing. The Bayern coach, along with leading figures such as LotharMatthaus and former defender SteffenFreund, expressed the need to give ownership to Urbig, citing his good performances with the team and the German national team against Serbia and Greece. Matthaus praised Urbig as "excellent" and stressed that his style is reminiscent of the young Neuer, while Freund underlined that "if Neuer should have difficulties, Urbig must be ready already during the championship".
Neuer's future remains uncertain. If the captain can regain his form, Bayern will be able to maintain their experience at the top; otherwise, the team risks delaying the handover to a time when the goal could be even more vulnerable. Next week the club will have to decide whether to continue to trust the veteran or start a new era with Urbig as the starting goalkeeper.
