The president of LaLiga, JavierTebas, published a statement today on platform In his message, Tebas defends his right to freedom of expression and questions the coherence of the criteria applied to him, recalling previous statements by FlorentinoPérez about the referees.
Tebas affirms: "I do not believe the news that the CSD is studying acting ex officio based on my statements. If confirmed, I hope that this study begins by reading what I wrote and reviewing some background information." In the statement, the president of LaLiga explains that his comments compared certain communication methods with “propaganda mechanisms” used by Goebbels, but that he did not intend to equate them to an ideology or to the Madrid fans. According to Tebas, the criticism was limited to pointing out the systematic repetition, the construction of an enemy and the subordination of the facts to the story, and that any interpretation that links it to an ideology would be a distortion of its intention.
The president of LaLiga also refers to statements by FlorentinoPérez, made on May 12, 2026, in which the president of Real Madrid stated that "I could have won 14 Leagues, but the others have been stolen from me" and that "they are still the same referees." Tebas points out that these statements, which suggest the theft of championships and suspicion about the referees, can be considered a threat to the integrity and prestige of the competition. In contrast, his own criticism of communication methods, with an explicit clarification not to equate them with an ideology, according to him, should be protected by freedom of expression.
The statement concludes with a request for transparency: "That what I really wrote be read, that the criteria be explained and that they be applied independently. Freedom of expression cannot depend on the last name of the speaker." Tebas leaves open the possibility that the CSD confirms his study, but hopes that it will be based on a faithful reading of his words and an objective evaluation of the facts. The next step will be to observe if the CSD publishes a decision or if the issue is resolved in the courts or in LaLiga's internal bodies.
