Stade Rennais attempted to strengthen their attack by offering a record financial offer to RC Lens striker Odsonne Édouard, but the player chose to stay in Artois to pursue his Champions League ambitions. According to L'Équipe, Rennes had increased efforts to convince the center forward to leave the Lens club, by offering him a gross monthly salary of between 250,000 and 300,000 euros, much higher than the 180,000 euros he received at Lens, not counting any bonuses. This offer would have placed Rennes in an advantageous position to attract a quality player at the heart of Rennes' attacking sector.
The negotiations also aroused the interest of other clubs, notably in England where Ipswich Town and Hull City had expressed their interest in Odsonne Édouard. The Saudi Pro League had also expressed interest, but no proposal was finalized. Despite these multiple options, the player decided to stay at RC Lens, motivated by his attachment to the club, his stable family situation and the prospect of playing in the Champions League, a decisive factor which weighed in his decision.
The refusal of Odsonne Édouard left Stade Rennais looking for an alternative to strengthen its attack. The Breton club then targeted Boulaye Dia, but he also refused to leave RC Lens, attracted by his attachment to Racing and the possibility of participating in the Champions League. Thus, Rennes failed to conclude a major transfer during this summer transfer window, despite the substantial financial offers it had proposed.
With these failures, Stade Rennais will have to rethink its offensive strategy for the coming season. The club may have to look to other options, whether by drafting players from Ligue 1 or looking for talent in the lower divisions. As for Odsonne Édouard, he will remain at RC Lens for the 2026-2027 season, ready to contribute to the club's ambitions in the Champions League and consolidate his role as offensive leader.
