Valencian full-back Alejandro Grimaldo has once again been a protagonist in Atlético de Madrid's 2024-25 season, demonstrating that his adaptation to the club has been consolidated after a difficult start. In Saturday's match against Deportivo La Coruña, his assist was decisive for Julián Álvarez to score the winning goal 1‑0 at the Metropolitano, securing the three points at home.
The turning point in Grimaldo's career with Colchonero came on the fifth matchday of LaLiga, when, after having been a substitute at Anfield, Diego Simeone started him in the match against Real Sociedad at Anoeta. With the score at 0‑0 and in the 84th minute, the player took the ball, placed himself in the penalty area and converted against Remiro, opening the lead that Atlético would maintain until the end, with goals from Jonathan David and Giuliano Simeone. Since then, the winger has continued to grow, becoming a key element in both attack and defense.
To date, Grimaldo has participated in 12 official matches for Atlético, scoring three goals and two assists, including Saturday's assist. He also scored a penalty against Real Madrid and a headed goal against Deportivo Alavés in Mendizorroza, where his left-footed shot left goalkeeper Sivera without a chance. In the nine league games he has played, he has contributed to five goals, a figure that aligns with his performance during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, where he was the side with the highest participation in goals in all of Europe.
The Argentine coach, Diego Simeone, has praised Grimaldo's evolution in the defensive aspect, pointing out that the player has improved in that aspect and that the team supports him to continue developing. "He contributes a lot to us in attack, he is a winger who plays as a winger and allows us to attack inside and out. We are working to make him better in defense and continue helping the team," commented Simeone before heading to the next match against Espanyol.
With the season still underway, Grimaldo emerges as one of Atlético's most relevant players, contributing both to the creation of opportunities and defensive solidity. His continuity in the squad and monitoring his development will be crucial for the club to maintain its position in the fight for the title and qualification for European competitions.
