Max Dowman, the 16-year-old from Arsenal, will have to serve a three-match ban after the red card he received in the Carabao Cup match against Fleetwood Town. The decision was confirmed by an independent commission, which rejected the appeal presented by the London club.
In the 85th minute of the match, Dowman was sent off for kicking Harrison Neal after a hard tackle. The action, which occurred when the Gunners were 10 against 11, was judged by referees and the commission as a foul of a violent nature. Although Arsenal had already lost 1-1 in normal time, the final result was determined on penalties, where the Gunners failed to overcome Fleetwood.
The club appealed against the expulsion, arguing that the decision was unfair and excessive. However, the Football Association (FA) reiterated that the independent commission rejected both claims that the sending off was unfair and that the punishment was excessive. The FA has announced that the committee's written reasons will be published in due course.
Thanks to the suspension, Dowman will not be able to participate in Arsenal's next three Premier League matches: against Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle. He will however be available for the Champions League match against Slavia Prague on 4 November and will be able to return to the pitch in the Premier League match against Manchester City on 29 November.
Dowman's case highlights the strict enforcement of disciplinary rules in the Carabao Cup competition and the FA's ability to intervene through independent commissions to ensure fairness and safety on the pitch. Arsenal will therefore have to review their squad for the next matches, while the young player will have to wait for the suspension to end before he can return to play for the Gunners.
