Olympique Marseille sporting director Daniel Riolo has expressed skepticism about the team's overall level this season, particularly regarding England midfielder Angel Gomes. After a series of mixed performances, OM returned to victory by beating Troyes 2–0, but concerns around the individual quality of certain players remain.
During RMC’s “After Foot” show, Riolo stressed that Gomes’ recent performances remain “absolutely abnormal” and that he does not understand why a player who scored against PSG cannot maintain this level. He raised the possibility that the OM context did not match Gomes' motivations and expectations, and suggested that a change of environment could improve his game. According to the consultant, it is crucial to examine the psychological and sporting aspects of the player rather than focusing only on his recent results.
Gomes must still find his place in a Marseille team that lacks benchmarks. His role in play creation, his influence on the last 30 meters and his ability to integrate into the team structure will be key points to watch. OM supporters, already unhappy with Gomes' performances, expect more regular performance from him, especially given his high remuneration.
Riolo did not indicate that a decision to leave was in progress, but his critical analysis highlights the challenges facing OM. If Gomes fails to improve, he could face increased competition, particularly with the possible reintroduction of Amine Harit to balance the XI. The club will therefore have to carefully evaluate the options available to maintain the cohesion and performance of its workforce.
