During a Premier League clash at Anfield on 15 August 2025, Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo, who was then a Bournemouth player, was allegedly subjected to racist abuse by a Liverpool supporter. The incident, which occurred roughly thirty minutes into the opening match of the season, was reported to the referee and later brought before Liverpool Magistrates’ Court.
According to the prosecution, Semenyo was preparing to take a throw‑in when 47‑year‑old Mark Mogan of Dovecot shouted a racial slur at him. Prosecutor Simon Jones described the player as “clearly hurt and upset,” noting that Semenyo “briefly froze” and could not believe what had been said. Mogan, who uses a wheelchair, denied that his behaviour was racially aggravated. The court heard that after the initial insult, Mogan continued to shout at the player, who did not respond before proceeding with the throw‑in. Mogan was removed from the ground at half‑time.
Video evidence shown to the court indicated that Mogan appeared “agitated and angry.” Witnesses, including Liverpool fan Neil Sherratt, testified that they saw Mogan approach the pitch from the disabled section of the Main Stand and shout something akin to “hurry up.” Sherratt reported that Semenyo’s reaction was one of shock and that the player seemed to reply, “you what.” Another spectator, Nicholas Collins, claimed that Mogan became “very cocky and brazen” after the incident and threatened to assault police if they approached him. Mogan later told police that he had only shouted at Semenyo to hurry up, and that the footballer had called him “a cripple,” which had upset him. He also stated that he had thrown chewing gum onto the floor rather than at the player.
The prosecution’s case hinges on allegations that Mogan lied during his police interview. Mogan’s lawyer, who represented him in court, maintained that the supporter had not committed racially aggravated behaviour. Semenyo is expected to give evidence via videolink, while the trial remains ongoing. The case highlights the continuing issue of racism in football and the legal ramifications for offenders.
