Nicola Berti, former Nerazzurri midfielder and now fervent Inter supporter, expressed his enthusiasm for Cristian Chivu's team in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, before the match against Fiorentina. The fan, who has always had a special bond with the Nerazzurri shirt, underlined the growth of Nicolò Barella, calling him "a legend" and "a true captain". Berti recalled how Barella, who arrived in Milan with a certain nervousness, has become the leader the team sees today, praising his ability to cover the pitch and his resistance, but adding that he still lacks a few decisive goals.
The comment then moved on to the protagonists of Inter's recent success in the Champions League, in particular the players' reaction to the victory against Shakhtar. Berti praised the performance of Josep Martinez, who made three outstanding saves after struggles against Real and Brugge, and expressed his belief that the goalkeeper deserves a break to get back into shape for the derby. He also called Francesco Pio Esposito "a genius", declaring that he is the best for Inter, and mentioned Diouf's important role in rotations, stating that "at the moment I like him very much".
Berti's past with Fiorentina has been cited to commemorate his transfer in 1988, when he was considered a "mercenary" and was sold to Napoli, but also to Milan and Juventus. His decision to join Inter, with the help of an Inter mother, was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the Nerazzurri fans. Berti recalled the emotion of returning to Florence as an opponent, with shaking legs for the first time in his career.
Despite the optimism, Berti warned Chivu about the need to improve the defense. “There are too many goals conceded, the defensive phase must be sorted out,” he said, underlining that this is the only criticism of the Nerazzurri project. However, he reiterated his faith in the team, stating that Inter have all the qualities to compete at the highest level, but that defensive solidity will be crucial to continuing to win. When asked if Inter can win six points in the next two matchdays, Berti replied confidently: "Of course. It must."
