Olympique de Marseille confirmed their renewed form by beating Toulouse FC 2–0 on matchday nine of Ligue1, marking a fourth consecutive victory and moving up to sixth place in the standings. The match, which took place at the Vélodrome, highlighted the newfound solidity and cohesion of the Marseille team, long criticized for its lack of structure.
For six games without an away victory, Toulouse FC was looking to break its misfortune and score its first victory at the Vélodrome in 14 years. The recent history of the match, with two tied matches (2–2) and a quarter-final of the Coupe de France which ended with a 4–3 in favor of Marseille, had nevertheless led us to believe that the Vélodrome was a favorite ground for visitors. However, OM have demonstrated that they are no longer content to play to their strengths against more modest teams, but that they can now impose their game even against strong opponents.
The first goal came in minute 1, when Amine Harit took advantage of a deep pass from Gouiri to shoot a poorly released ball from Guillaume Restes. In the 25th minute, Harit struck again, this time collecting an improbable header from Igor Paixão, doubling the score. The two Marseille attackers showed great efficiency in pressing and in rapid transitions, which put Toulouse in difficulty from the start of the match. In the second half, OM slowed down slightly, but were saved from a potential goal thanks to the intervention of the VAR in the 68th minute.
Despite some defensive flaws, Bruno Génésio's team managed to maintain a solid structure and remain united on the pitch. The Marseille collective proved that they were now capable of playing cohesively, in stark contrast to the disorganized performance seen in September, where the team seemed devoid of any collective strength. Jeffrey De Lange's role was also crucial, providing Imperial support for the attack.
At the end of this match, OM are in sixth place, only a few points from first place, which opens up new prospects for the rest of the season. The next challenge will be to maintain this dynamic during the next meeting in Bollaert, where the team will have to prove that it is capable of transforming its positive performances into concrete results. Marseille supporters, who have long waited for a return to stability, can now hope that this new era of cohesion and performance will be consolidated in the weeks to come.
