Dortmund has added a "Fan Mode" feature to its official smartphone app to offer a new experience for watching matches. The system was introduced in earnest starting with the game against Frankfurt on the 24th, and points are awarded to fans who watch the game with their smartphones locked inside the stadium, and those who rank high will be awarded autographed jerseys, fan shop gift cards, and more.
"Fan Mode" locks your smartphone by simply turning it on within the app. While locked, points will be accumulated every minute during the match, and during halftime you can use your smartphone as usual, but in the second half you will need to switch back to "Fan Mode". Additionally, you will need location permission to confirm that you are at the stadium. Use is voluntary, and participation in the lottery is also free.
A survey conducted in 2023 by Vodafone, Dortmund's main sponsor, reported that 63% of spectators frequently use their smartphones during matches. The club explained that it was concerned about the increasing number of fans becoming absorbed in social media, selfies, and streaming, and introduced this feature to reaffirm the value of experiencing matches live.
President Kirsten Kramer said, ``There is no substitute for the moment when over 81,000 people sing, cheer, and hold their breath in unison,'' demonstrating the company's commitment to the live experience. Vodafone Germany President Marcel de Vroat also commented, ``We want you to experience the moments and emotions in soccer. We want you to leave your smartphone in your pocket and concentrate on what's happening on the pitch and in the stands.''
This initiative will create a more focused environment for fans to watch matches, while providing new fan engagement opportunities for clubs and sponsors. Dortmund plans to expand this system to other matches in the future to improve the quality of the fan experience.
