On 11 October 1999 the San Siro hosted the farewell match of Giuseppe Bergomi, Inter icon, who headed to the pitch for the last time as a footballer. The event, organized by agent Giocondo Martorelli and manager Paolo Buratti, saw the participation of numerous guests, including singers, actors and international football stars.
The evening was a real journey into the history of the club: the first two teams on the pitch were those of the 1989 scudetto, with Trapattoni on the bench, and that of the 1982 Italian national team, which had won the World Cup in Spain. Subsequently, the most recent Inter, with Simoni on the bench, faced the 1999 national team. The event offered fans the chance to relive iconic moments from Inter's history, while Bergomi was able to greet the public with a final gesture of gratitude.
Among those present were artists such as Eros Ramazzotti, Biagio Antonacci, Laura Freddi, Elenoire Casalegno, Roberto Vecchioni, Elio e le Storie Tese, Enrico Bertolino, Ivana Spagna and Gioele Dix. But the list of guests was not limited to music: world-famous footballers such as Matthaus, Klinsmann, Rummenigge, Zenga, Paolo Maldini, Del Piero, Ronaldo and Vieri also appeared on stage. The presence of these players gave the event an atmosphere of great prestige and celebration of Bergomi's career.
During the ceremony Bergomi talked about his journey, recalling the period in which he had a "half agreement" to move to New York with Donadoni and the Metrostars, but then a problem arose with foreigners. He then explained how, after waiting for the opportunity in America, he was called by Gordon Strachan, Coventry manager, and how Sandro Mazzola's proposal led him to return to Italy. Bergomi added that, although there is a small regret for not having been able to carry out that project, he has always tried to honor his new path with commitment and dedication.
Bergomi's farewell to the San Siro was a moment of great emotion for Inter fans and all football fans. Thanks to his long career, his contribution to the club and his presence on the pitch, Bergomi remains a reference figure for future generations. With the end of his playing career, the footballer is preparing to take on new challenges, continuing to represent Inter with pride and passion.
