OM supporters reacted firmly after the decision of coach Bruno Genesio to sideline Keyliane Abdallah, the young 20-year-old striker, following his late and uninvolved entry during the match against Le Havre. The match, which ended with a score of 4-1 in favor of OM, saw the Phocéens trailing 4-0 before the opponent got dangerously close, creating palpable tension on the pitch. Genesio judged that the involvement of Abdallah, who was considered too nonchalant, did not correspond to the expectations of the team, and therefore reprimanded him in the locker room before sanctioning him sportingly.
The sanction consists of a demotion of Abdallah to the Pro2 team, without a return date specified. This measure aims to remind young players that the opportunities offered by the club must be accompanied by constant investment on the pitch. Genesio stressed that this decision sends a clear message to the entire workforce: progression does not come without effort. Abdallah, who sought to establish himself in the professional group, must now prove that he has understood the lessons of this episode.
This sidelining is not an isolated incident. According to L’Équipe, the player had already been called to order the previous year for concentration problems. The recent incident against Le Havre therefore puts this question at the center of discussions between the player and the staff. Abdallah would have understood Genesio's reproaches and would consider speaking with him in order to clarify the situation. A conversation which could be decisive for the rest of his career at OM, where competition to permanently integrate the professional group remains strong.
Genesio's decision also sparked reactions among Marseille supporters. A survey published by But! revealed that 61.9% of Internet users consider the sanction to be deserved, 19% see it for the good of the club, and 14.3% consider it normal, while only 4.8% consider it abusive. In total, 95.2% of the votes are distributed between responses that consider the sanction deserved, normal or beneficial for the club, showing majority support for the coach's decision.
For Abdallah, the demotion constitutes a serious warning. The young striker must now respond on the pitch and prove that he can learn from this episode. The club remains determined to offer him a second chance, but he will need to demonstrate a tangible improvement in his involvement and concentration. OM expects him to get back on better footing, in order to regain the trust of the staff and remain competitive in the quest for a permanent place within the professional group.
