Daniel Fonseca, former Cagliari striker, recalled his time in Sardinia in an interview with Tuttosport, ahead of the match between rossoblù and Juventus. The Portuguese, born in Montevideo and arrived in Italy at the age of twenty, spoke about the experience of moving to a foreign country without knowing what awaited him, but with the hope of growing as a player.
Fonseca described the first years of his arrival at Cagliari as "a wonderful time". At the time, Serie A hosted all the great talents in the world and the press welcomed him with enthusiasm. However, the pressure of results quickly changed the atmosphere. “The press welcomed me in a super way, then it became harsh for the results,” he said, underlining how the criticism became more severe as the team failed to obtain positive results.
The most difficult moment was the first seventeen games without scoring. Fonseca explained that, despite his frustration, coach Claudio Ranieri has always trusted him. “Ranieri saw something different in that boy,” he recalled, adding that the manager's trust allowed him to overcome the goal-scoring stalemate. The turning point came in the second half of his freshman year, when he started scoring. The brace against Sampdoria, in which he beat Marassi, was a turning point: "Since that day I have never stopped", he declared.
Fonseca also highlighted the importance of a guide like Ranieri. “He wanted me in blue and asked me to go there: wonderful,” he said. He recalled that, despite the initial difficulties, Cagliari was able to show their quality. “We weren't bad guys and in fact we achieved two important salvations, the first with Ranieri and the other with Mazzone,” he added, referring to the team's successes in the salvation phase.
In conclusion, Fonseca expressed gratitude for the experience lived in Sardinia and for the opportunity to grow under the guidance of high-level coaches. His testimony underlines how the trust of a coach can make the difference in the career of a young footballer, transforming a phase of difficulty into a springboard towards success.
