A police officer sustained a serious facial injury during the aftermath of the Liverpool vs. Manchester City match at Anfield, prompting a police response that resulted in ten arrests, including five individuals suspected of chanting in reference to the 2019 Hillsborough tragedy. Merseyside Police confirmed that the incident occurred in the early evening after City secured a 3‑0 victory over the Reds.
The force said one man was taken into custody on charges of assaulting a constable, after the officer was struck while performing his duties on Anfield Road around 18:30 BST. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and is now reported to be recuperating at home. In addition to the assault charge, police arrested another fan on suspicion of drunkenness and disorderly conduct, two others for affray, and one for allegedly throwing objects onto the pitch.
Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin described the behaviour as “disappointing” and condemned the use of tragedy chants, stating that such references “had no place in football.” She emphasised that chanting about the Hillsborough disaster causes distress to families of those who lost their lives and that the police would continue to collaborate with clubs to identify and prosecute offenders. Hobin also thanked the majority of the 60,000 spectators for their cooperation, noting that most fans behaved appropriately despite the hostile atmosphere.
The match itself was marked by heightened tensions, as City’s arrival at Anfield was through the staff and contractors’ entrance to avoid confrontation. Red fans displayed half‑and‑half scarves with the slogan “Shamchester City – The Cheats,” while banners inside the stadium shouted “A Generation Of Supporters Cheated.” The hostile reception was a reminder of the intense rivalry and the need for increased security measures in future fixtures.
With the police action underway, the focus now shifts to the legal proceedings against the arrested individuals and to the broader discussion of fan conduct and safety at Premier League matches. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful environment for both players and officials, and the authorities will likely review their protocols to prevent a recurrence.
