Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has confirmed that the club will not pursue a January loan for 19‑year‑old Estêvão Willian, insisting instead that the Brazilian winger must adapt to the Premier League style before earning a regular place in the squad. The decision comes amid growing speculation that the Chelsea fan favourite could seek a move after limited game time this season.
Estêvão, who joined the club for £51.4 million from Palmeiras last year, made an immediate impression with a spectacular solo goal against Barcelona in his first season. A hamstring injury, however, curtailed his momentum and he has struggled to regain his form since returning. In the current campaign he has appeared in just 11 matches across all competitions, logging only 47 minutes in the Premier League. After a brief recall to the Brazil squad by coach Carlo Ancelotti, the winger has yet to convince Alonso of his readiness for regular action.
During a post‑match press conference following Chelsea’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, Alonso made it clear that any thoughts of a loan move were unfounded. “There are no discussions about that,” he said. “Players want to play, and when they haven’t had enough minutes because of my decision, I take responsibility. Everyone has to be ready because any player can be important in a game.” He praised Estêvão’s training ethic and attitude, noting that the youngster is still in the early stages of adapting to the Premier League’s pace and physicality.
Alonso outlined the tactical demands he expects from Estêvão, emphasizing the importance of both on‑ball and off‑ball work. “It’s not just about improving without the ball,” he explained. “With the ball, you must make the right decisions, keep possession, and find the correct pass. Off the ball, you need to be competitive. The Premier League’s tempo is higher than other leagues, and for a teenager to thrive here takes time and learning from mistakes.” He added that the winger could be deployed in a deeper “pocket” role as a No. 10 depending on the match context, although his primary position has been on the flank.
The decision also reflects Chelsea’s current squad situation. With defenders Jorrel Hato nursing a back problem and Maxence Lacroix out until after the international break due to a hamstring injury, the team faces selection challenges ahead of their upcoming clash with Manchester United. Alonso’s focus remains on integrating Estêvão into the squad’s tactical framework while ensuring he gains the necessary experience to compete at the highest level. The young Brazilian will look to prove himself in the remaining fixtures, as Chelsea prepare to host United on Saturday.
