On 16 August, just three months after the Italian Cup final lost against Inter, Lazio were eliminated from the event at the end of a match against Mantova. It was Gennaro Gattuso's debut as coach, and the team already seemed to be in a spiral of decline. Two months later, however, the same team found themselves at the top of the table, sharing the lead with Inter. After the 3‑1 victory over Monza, Gattuso declared that he did not feel like a "run away from home", underlining the importance of previous experiences for his technical approach.
Gattuso recalled the difficult moments of his coaching career, citing the defeats against Zenica, the loss of a title with Hajduk Split, and the near-qualifiers for the Champions League with Napoli and Milan. Despite these failures, his management of Lazio has demonstrated an ability to renew the team: he relaunched players like Noslin and Belahyane, dusted off Nuno Tavares and optimized the market with targeted operations. The sale of Mario Gila for 30 million euros made it possible to finance new purchases and loans, including Frattesi, Gudmindsson and Sutalo, in addition to the purchase of Pinamonti.
Lazio's success was not the result of a simple roster change, but of a construction strategy based on patience and consolidation. Gattuso highlighted that the team is not aiming for the title, but to consolidate a position among the top positions in the rankings. The lesson that Lazio offers to clubs like Juventus, Milan and Fiorentina is that simply increasing spending does not guarantee victories; instead, careful management of existing players can produce more sustainable results.
The upcoming calendar includes important matches, including the clash at the Stadio Olimpico against Juventus. Gattuso reiterated that the first place position is not the final goal, but a point of reference. With the team still in the consolidation phase, the near future will be determined by the ability to maintain the current form and face the next challenges with the same determination that brought Lazio to the top of the table.
