The name of the famous Milan stadium has changed: from SanSiro to GeneraliStadium. The naming rights agreement, signed between the two teams and the Generali insurance group, provides a value of approximately 30 thousand euros per year for at least twenty years, with Generali also becoming the official insurance partner of Inter and Milan. The new stadium, which will replace the Meazza, must be inaugurated in the 2031/32 season, provided that the necessary authorizations are obtained. Construction work is scheduled for 2028.
The project was conceived by Foster+Partners and MANICA, with the participation of Lord NormanFoster and the Italian designer DavidManica. The project covers an area of 281000m², of which 182000m² will be allocated to the stadium structure and 12500m² to the podium. The overall capacity will be approximately 71,500 spectators, divided into 59,692 standard seats, 8,088 hospitality seats and 3,698 premium seats, as well as 394 seats for wheelchair users. The two curves, each with 11,700 seats, will be designed as real "fan walls", with a slope of up to 37 degrees and particular attention to acoustics. Manica explained that the front row will be closer to the pitch than at the Meazza, while Foster underlined the importance of maintaining the traditional atmosphere of the SanSiro.
The roof of the new stadium will cover all sectors and host 27500m² of photovoltaic panels, making the infrastructure entirely electric. The lighting will be made with high-efficiency LEDs, while the recovery of rainwater and the recycling of gray water will be part of the sustainable solutions adopted. The design includes two large rings of 360-degree stands, with optimal views from all points of view, and the aim is to preserve the elements that have made the SanSiro recognisable, updating them to the needs of a modern stadium.
According to the protagonists, the new stadium must remain a "feeling", more than a simple building. Manica stated that the GeneraliStadium must be "even more SanSiro" than the current one, maintaining the identity and emotion that have characterized the structure for over a century. With the creation of this new arena, Inter and Milan intend to offer a more immersive and sustainable experience to fans, while ensuring cutting-edge infrastructure and an ecologically responsible environment.
