Borja Mayoral, Getafe's all-time top scorer, has been practically out of action in the League this season, accumulating only five minutes in the first eight LaLiga games. Despite his dominant role in previous years, the Madrid striker has been relegated to a substitute role in matches in the domestic competition, while players such as Enes Ünal, Iván Azón and Martín Satriano have spent more time in the Azulona forward line.
The youngster from Parla has appeared in only two league games, one against Racing de Santander and four against Osasuna, and since his last appearance on August 31 at El Sadar he has not played in the championship again. However, Mayoral has had opportunities in the UEFA Conference League, participating in both matches of the previous qualifying round against Partizan Belgrade, where he came on from the bench. This participation in the European competition suggests that coach JoséBordalás still considers him within the team's options, although his time in the League is limited.
The main reason for their low participation is the strong competition up front from Getafe. Ünal, Azón and Satriano have been the most active forwards in the first games of the season, which has left Mayoral in a waiting position. Despite this, coach Bordalás has expressed that the forward is training normally and that he hopes his performance improves to once again be a key element of the attack. In a press conference on October 9, before the match against Barcelona, Bordalás stated that Mayoral “is aware that he has to take a step forward, improve his performance and help the team” and that he demands the most from the entire squad.
Mayoral has proven his value to the club in the 2023-24 season, when he won the Zarra Trophy after scoring 15 goals in the League and 17 in all competitions. A serious knee injury interrupted his progress in the previous campaign, preventing him from maintaining the continuity he had achieved. With Getafe needing to improve their offensive performance, the forward hopes to regain his prominence in the coming games.
Getafe's next match will be on Monday against Rayo Vallecano at the Coliseum. This game represents a new opportunity for Mayoral to earn minutes again and get closer to the role he played in previous seasons. The club and the coach hope that the forward can demonstrate his ability and contribute to the goal of improving the team's offense in the current season.
