Olympique Lyonnais today finds itself at a crossroads regarding its coach Paulo Fonseca. While the Rhone leaders have been working for several weeks to extend his contract, a new threat comes from Portugal: Sporting CP have reportedly identified Fonseca as a first choice candidate to succeed Rui Borges. According to Flashscore sources relayed by Foot01, Sporting, which is third in the Portuguese championship nine points behind FC Porto, would be ready to offer Fonseca a leading position after a disappointing start to the season for his team.
The financial file between the two clubs could facilitate negotiations. Lyon must still pay 6.4 million euros to Sporting as part of the transfer of Afonso Moreira to Bayer Leverkusen, for an amount of 33.6 million euros. This sum, which remains to be paid, could serve as leverage for a possible agreement on the coach. Under contract until June 2027, Fonseca could not freely join Sporting during the season, but a financial arrangement between the two clubs could be considered to allow his departure.
Fonseca, 53, was named OL coach in January 2025, succeeding Pierre Sage, and led the team to a 2–1 victory over Nice on October 19. The Lyon sporting director, Matthieu Louis-Jean, then confirmed that discussions were underway to extend his contract, declaring that the team “always discusses with the coach, we take our time”. This cautious approach could now be called into question by the interest of Sporting, who wishes to recruit an experienced coach to take up the colors of his club and participate in European competitions.
For OL, the prospect of leaving in the middle of the season is particularly worrying. The club must now prepare a succession plan while continuing to support Fonseca in his current missions. Sporting's next matches, notably against CasaPia, Shakhtar Donetsk and Moreirense, could be decisive for the future of Rui Borges and, by extension, for the Lisbon club's decision regarding Fonseca.
In the absence of an official offer from Sporting, the situation remains fluid. Lyon leaders will probably have to speed up negotiations in order to secure Fonseca's presence beyond June 2027. The next month will be decisive to know if the European giant manages to snatch the Lyon coach or if OL manages to retain him despite external pressure.
