Roma returned to play in the Champions League, but victory was not guaranteed. The match against Real Madrid, played at the Olimpico, ended 3-4 in favor of Los Blancos, with a spectacular comeback in the final minutes. For over 80 minutes the Giallorossi team held the lead, but a final blackout allowed Real to recover three goals, including a decisive one from Rudiger, and overcome Roma.
The context was already tense. Gian Piero Gasperini's team had to deal with the absence of Koné and Dybala, two key players who risk becoming "sore points" for the team. Despite this, Roma showed good defensive organization and an effective attack, managing to score three goals against a high-level opponent. The result, however, was compromised by Real's performance in the final minutes, when the Spanish team took advantage of Roma's accumulated effort to nullify their superiority.
After the match, Gasperini tried to explain the turnaround. "Three equal goals, we failed. What is annoying is that they scored three goals easily, we were silhouettes in a context in which the match was of a completely different quality", declared the coach. "The result is this: there is the risk of canceling the 80 minutes done well, I can't do that. But the matches must be brought to the end." Gasperini's analysis highlights the difficulty of maintaining a constant pace against a high-quality team.
On the manager Mourinho's front, the response was more direct. "The responsibility for the first part of the match is mine. The credit for the ending goes to the players," said the Portuguese, accepting blame for the start of the match. "They were very strong today, but I knew that the fuel would run out. Impossible to have this pace for 90 minutes. I made the changes that I thought needed to be made." Mourinho then reiterated his trust in the players, whilst acknowledging the need for a more balanced approach.
With this result, Roma remains in a delicate position in the Champions League standings. The team will need to reflect on fatigue management strategies and bench decisions to avoid similar reversals in the future. The next match, scheduled for next week, will be crucial to re-establish the team's confidence and competitiveness on the European stage.
