Napoli were able to include Giovane in the European squad for tonight's match against Villarreal, despite having been excluded from the Champions League list when it was compiled. Coach Massimiliano Allegri explained that the decision was motivated by the injury of Costantino Favasuli, who had to remain out for a prolonged period, and by the need to have a quality striker available for the group stage of the Champions League.
Giovane, born in 2003, returned to action on Saturday against Frosinone, where he started in the 72nd minute in place of Noa Lang and provided an assist. The Brazilian, who moved to Napoli in January for a cost of two million euros plus 18,000 in bonuses, has had few opportunities in Serie A so far, with twenty-one appearances and three goals for SantaBárbarad'Oeste's team. His first season in Serie A was characterized by integration difficulties and physical problems, but his recent debut suggests that the situation could change.
The change in regulations approved by UEFA on 11 September 2025 made it possible to replace an injured player during the group stage, up to the sixth matchday of the championship. The rule, which allows the temporary substitution of up to one player, was introduced to prevent teams from being penalized by long-term injuries and to protect players from excessive workloads. In the case of Napoli, the substitution was made following the injury of Favasuli, who suffered a second-degree injury to the rectus femoris of his right thigh and will be out for around two months.
Allegri underlined that Giovane is a player with enormous potential and that, given the current context, he is the most sensible choice for tonight's match. If Giovane were to start the match, it would be the first time this season and the fourth since his arrival at the club. The decision reflects Napoli's desire to make the most of the available resources, while ensuring the continuity of the European squad in a period of injuries.
With the match against Villarreal scheduled for this evening, Napoli is preparing to take advantage of the opportunity to have Giovane play in the Champions League. If he manages to maintain his form, the Neapolitan club will be able to count on a quality striker also in European competitions, while Favasuli's situation remains under observation until he is ready to return to the field.
